Eirene: Greek Goddess of Peace
Eirene, also known as Irene, is a revered figure in Greek mythology, particularly within the Hellenic tradition. As the personification of peace, she holds a significant place in ancient Greek culture. Eirene is syncretic with the Roman goddess Pax, further emphasising her universal significance as a symbol of peace.
While the worship of Eirene may not be as prevalent today as it was in ancient times, her symbolism and importance persist. Modern practitioners may still honour her as a deity representing peace, harmony, and reconciliation. She certainly seems a very pertinent goddess to call on in our current turbulent times.
Mythological Stories
In Greek mythology, Eirene is one of the Horae, or Hours, who represent the seasons and the natural order of time. She is often depicted as a serene and youthful figure, holding an olive branch, symbolising peace, and cradling her son Ploutos (Plutus), the god of wealth and prosperity.
Despite her gentle demeanour, Eirene is not passive; she is sometimes portrayed destroying armaments, emphasising that peace does not equate to submission but rather the absence of conflict and violence.
Themes and Attributes
Eirene embodies themes of harmony, tranquility, and prosperity. While she is primarily associated with peace, her connection to her son Ploutos highlights the link between peace and abundance. It's believed that true prosperity cannot flourish in the absence of peace, underscoring Eirene's vital role in fostering both inner and outer harmony.
Why You Might Call on This Goddess
Calling on Eirene can be beneficial for those seeking inner peace, resolution of conflicts, or the promotion of peaceful resolutions in challenging situations. She offers guidance and support in creating a harmonious environment both individually and collectively. Eirene reminds us that peace is not just the absence of conflict but a state of balance and prosperity for all.

Items on an altar dedicated to Eirene may include symbols of peace such as a white dove, an olive branch, representations of the Horae, and soothing colours like blue or white. Additionally, incorporating images or symbols of her son Ploutos (for example, with coins and silver and gold candles and colours) can emphasise the connection between peace and prosperity.
Offerings to Eirene can include olive oil, honey, bread, flowers, or acts of service aimed at promoting peace and harmony in the world. These offerings symbolise gratitude and reverence for her role in fostering peace and abundance.
